If there is a time for silence in the loud hallways of life, maybe college isn't that time. We search and search for peace, but only find chores, tasks, and annoying humans sucking every piece of quiet from a once serene world. Yes, there was a time when silence was a virtue in the home; a time of prejudice, racism and sexism; a time of pwer and middle aged white men with degrees from Harvard and Yale, when they actually meant intelligence. Intelligence. It seems like a foreign ideal, bt is it? Many times we hear people speaking on the streets or in the bars and never approach them. Why? Do they bite? No we are afraid they will either say something important we never though of or that they won't agree with our ideals. That to me is ignorance. I met a man in a bar who spoke eloquently of his life, loves and opinions on this cruel world. He was an intelligent man because he dared to think; he dared to think differently than anyone I have ever known. At first I was irritated, then I re-evaluated the conversation. All of his ideas were valid and true, as I had read in my studies. It is at that point in my life that I began to take a new view on life. American government is loaded with cover-ups of mistakes the government is too cowardly to admit. are we to trust everything an elected official says? I should say not! In order to find proof of the government lying or stretching the truth all you have to do is read a book written in the 50's and 60's. In that time, almost everyone in the entire system was feeding in to the same lie. What the public doesn't know won't hurt them. Oh how they were wrong. Riots, parades, hippies, and of course all the movements could and should not be forgotten. Everyone in college now a days is talking loud in order to be heard, but are they talking about something interesting? You'll never know unless you take the time to sit and talk to people. When people find out I am a history major, they look, laugh and say good luck or tell me it's boring. My dear, history is the story of the common man, the aristocrat, the royalty, the wars, the blunders of great men, documents tellingus how to live, countries and nation's trials, tribulations and achievements, and of course the mistakes so that we may never forget and maybe not make the same mistakes. How can that be boring? It is the buildings and historical landmarks, museums and old houses that tell the common man and the rich man's story, while the books and documents serve as a secondary source to how men and women lived during a time of our story. Just think, in a few thousand years, all this will either perish in a fire and be sucked into the sun along with the rest of the Galaxy we call the Milky Way. So, you see, it is not boring nor interesting to learn about our beginning, middle and end, it is to be commended and hailed as the most intelligent force of learning in this crazy world we call home.
